baseball and paint cans

on wednesday kevin and i decided to do some decorating and paint our kitchen. we've lived in our place for almost three years now but we haven't really finished making it our own. we've always thought this place was only temporary so we haven't put too much into the decor. now we've come to realize that the only way we're leaving this place is if a) we leave toronto, b) we break up or c) we buy a place. thus, we've decided to do some renovations and make our apartment a little nicer. that means paint, building some benches so we can actually eat at our kitchen table instead of on the couch, de-cluttering, getting some real furniture instead of just ikea stuff and putting up some photos. we started out by painting the kitchen yellow and kevin planted some plants in our window box. hopefully they thrive and in a few weeks we'll have peppers and tomatoes from our garden. after working around the house all day we headed to our first baseball game. kevin and i have a team in a beer league with our friends. we're called the barracudas and we won our first game 22-5. i even hit a single, yeah! hopefully i get better as the games go on because i'd like to be less afraid of catching the ball and hit farther. almost all the guys hit homeruns so it looks like we may have another winning season. my outfit on wednesday consisted of my new checked top that i love, it's so sweet and some cute red flats. i also wore a boxing day sales bargain, my marc by marc sweater coat. i love how it's military inspired and that it is almost an outfit in itself when done up. it could even be worn as a dress. plus, it's navy and i'm a little obsessed with nautical and navy blue right now. the outfit was inspired by the last blair waldorf outfit from this post.

this is what a days work looks like

so as i wrote yesterday i did some shopping on tuesday and i was really happy with what was in the stores this week. sometimes when i hit the shops nothing suits me or everything i love is way out of my price range. there are days when i go to h&m and try on 7 or 8 things but buy nothing. on tuesday i found 6 great things all at reasonable prices. i got two more bird printed tees because i love the neckline and the graphic. i already have this top in white but it's always good to have a backup in a white tee as they always get dingy fast. i got the black for variety. i found a great studded tank with a scooped low back, an adorable tiered ruffle checked dress, a silk slouchy navy tank and a checked tank with bow in the front and buttons down the back. my first purchase on tuesday was these fantastic studded gladiators. they a pretty much exact copies of an etro pair and they've been feature on whowhatwerardaily.com. i intended to buy these the other day but changed my mind at the last minute. then when i went back to buy them they were sold out and i was so disappointed. luckily when i went in on tuesday they were in stock again. etro also did a great wooded platform with studded straps too that i would love to have. i found two cute floral headbands at forever 21 along with some great fabric elastics. at urban outfitters i had my future cottage vacation in mind and got some cozy mens tops. the striped winterlite was on sale and to love the teal and grey colour combo. the hoodie is super soft jersey with three quarter length sleeves. i found a great tribal print scarf in charcoal and neon and two new nail polishes. one is grey and the other light blue, a homage to the ubiquitous 1990's hard candy shade. that's it for purchases but next post will feature my painting exploits, baseball adventures, an amazing ebay purchase and a cute outfit.

green dragon and avocado maki with brown rice

tuesday was a fun afternoon of shopping tell i dropped followed by sushi with british vogue. i also thought since i've been slacking a little with outfits lately i'd breakout some newer pieces and put together something special. i wore my button front high waisted skirt that kevin got me for christmas, i had yet to wear it, and my suede t-straps that i bought last summer on a day when my flip flops were cutting into my skin so bad. i had to buy these shoes so i could walk home without permanent foot damage. i found some pretty cute ones to put me out of my misery, don't you think? the heart shaped glasses were another last summer purchase that i hardly wear but after seeing rumi on fashion toast rock here white frames so well i thought i'd give them a try. finally, i needed a topper as it's still a little cool and at first i thought my newly modified jean jacket would be the one. it did look pretty cute but then i remembered my rad new 90's floral jacket i got vintage shopping on the weekend and took it out of my hamper to complete this outfit. the look was perfect and i even got a few complements whilst shopping, so nice! i ended up buying quite a few cute things, where will i put it all?, but more on that next post. after hitting the bellwoods farmers market for yummy organic sheep's cheese and i went to sushi with my copy of british vogue and had an amazing meal. my night ended with bulfinch's mythology and stories about the knights of the round table, i know i'm a geek.

i heart mondays

this is a quick post because lately i've been in a fashion rut and i haven't been wearing very interesting outfits. i stuck to jeans and *chucks* today, gossip girl was on after all. i tried to make the plaid shirt a little more interesting by adding my favourite vintage belt with its silver hearts. these sevens i got at a thrift store and after removing the slightly hideous crystals off the back pockets and repaired the then torn stitching i think they look great for 6 dollars. what else can i say.. gossip girl was amazing again tonight. i loved blair and serena's dinner dresses and chuck looked fab in his tux of course. i can't wait for the finale next week and the season one dvd. i also went home to see my mom for mother's day and my aunt is visiting from portugal for the month. she brought some cool jewelry that is all handmade and is for sale. i will post some pictures of the pieces i bought along with my newest vintage purchase soon.

marie doillon

i have had a picture from this editorial on my sidebar for a week or so but i thought i'd post it big along with two others from the may issue of french marie claire. i love lou doillon and her effortless style. i think charlotte gainsbourg, jane birkin's other daughter and lou's half sister, or clemence posey better represent french style and lou is more of a blend of french chic and british rock and roll. she's stunning and very cool plus, she's a mom and it's mother's day.

my name isn't $%*! warren!

after 2 hours wrapped up in the world of empire records, chasing shopliffers, glueing down quarters and damning the man i was left with a bittersweet feeling. thinking back to when i first saw the film in 8th grade with so much teen angst and hope for the future. i would have never guessed that such a cool record store would have probably succomb to the lack a record sales and closed down today. i wouldn't think that out of university i would still be trying to figure out what i want to do with my life so i could move on from the monotony of waiting tables. i can empathize with aj and how he's been at empire for 5 years but really just wants to move on and go to art school. how do you leave a place where all your friends work and where you feel so comfortable? who new a mid 90's teen flick would lead to such heavy thinking? as for the clothes, the movie takes place in one day so there isn't too much to look at but i do love aj's grungy sweater and corey's mini kilt with hiking boots. it also reminded me the in the mid nineties girls showed midriff but only at the waist so they didn't have awful muffin top fat sticking out unlike the britney low rise midriff of the new millennium. girls always balanced their floaty a line mini's with slightly looser "this thing from off my floor" tops. it was easy, not trying hard, i just put this together dressing. very inspiring. i also loved seeing all my teen crushes, especially a young rory cochrene as lucas. as well as, the delightful liv tyler in her prime and renee z. in a role you actually enjoy watching her in, she's great as gina. if you haven't seen the film since high school get the new extended dvd and fall in love with the crew of empire and the fabulous soundtrack all over again. remember when the man get you down, lucas puts it best, "in this life, there are nothing but possibilities."

greetings queen west siders

i decided to channel a prep school princess with my take on a stylized school uniform. i went to catholic school but we didn't get to wear jumpers we had kilts or dress pants for a uniform instead. i've always loved the private school look i've seen in anime, gossip girl and in magazines so when i found this vintage jumper i had to have it. the bow was a total rip off from blair but i decided against ballet flats and knee socks in an attempt to look less gossip girl extra and more reality. i went with my trusty moccasins instead.

met ball magic

i know every site has had their own coverage of the met ball. but, seeing as it is the new york fashion event of the year i thought it would be worth posting some pictures of it here. i was a little disappointed with the lack of superhero outfits. i felt that people weren't embracing the ball's superhero theme and as a girl who obsessed over xmen as a kid i would have gone all out channeling shadowcat or jubilee. i guess people didn't want to come off as costumey, it wasn't halloween after all. my favourite super hero outfit of the night was kate mara and zac posen as superman. i've loved her since i saw shooter, great movie that makes you lust over mark walburg like he's marky mark again, she is so cute. i also thought christina ricci was very wonder womanlike in her red sheer dress, another amazing beauty. there's some pics of the gossip gang, got to love ed/mr.bass;the fab models coco and kate looking flawless;diane and her man josh, he did not look that good on dawson's creek, she is always on point; the olsens looking very powerful, especially ashley; alexander wang; emily mortimer because she's delightful and charmed the hell out of me during a late night interview the other month; and finally lou doillon with short hair! looking uber cool in marni and leather like only she can, those french girls.

*all pics from style.com, except the 2 single shots of kate mara from popsugar.

my match

you know when you see something that perfectly matches who you are, this is one of those things. it's like this bangle makes me feel less guilty for sleeping in and waking up for lunch instead of breakfast. it reads, "truly fabulous people never get dressed before lunchtime". maybe i'll have to spend my tax return on something frivolous instead of squirreling it away. i'm sitting here typing this to you while watching a csi miami marathon with rascal cat whose nursing a cut neck, poor guy. baseball got cancelled because of rain so it looks like i'm spending a quite night at home with speed, horatio and lots of magazines to cut out.

show me love

so as i've said i went to the robyn show at the phoenix on monday and the swedish blond put on an incredible show. the audience sang along to almost every song as you can see from the video and she did a fierce medley of buffalo stance, push it and sexual eruption. she actually did a duet with snoop for that song and you can get it on itunes. i went to the show with jessie and andrew and after robyn's two encores i picked up a great robyn printed tote and headed to meet up with the gang at brazen head. although i had some robyn downloads and her late 90's hit "show me love" on a number of mix tapes i didn't have her new record as it's just been released here. so i picked it up today and it's a fantastic disc, my favourite song is "be mine". i also love "with every heartbeat", "who's that girl", "bum like you", "konichiwa bitches" and "handle me". check out some vids below of "show me love" and "keep this fire burning". i would have posted "be mine" but i was bouncing around so much whilst filming it you might throw up if you watch it.

bum like you

today i woke up a little late after nachos and blue light at brazen head plus some late night gossip girl watching on youtube. i still have to catch the last half as i couldn't find it uploaded anywhere. i decided to check out some shoes and pick up the robyn album so kevin and i went to bloor st. i bought some fantastic nine west gladiator heels, no not the ones your thinking of, although those wedges may be mine soon as well. they're blue with big buckles and super comfortable and i could have got three pairs there were so many nice pairs there right now. after shopping we went to future bakery to hang with the university kids and eat chicken stew and chocolate blackout cake, my favourite. i wore my new 90s dress that i thrifted the other day and my fab black leather moccs. i know my eyes are closed in the outfit pic but i think it looks kind of cute so i posted it anyway. it's like i'm imagining something good. tonight i'm going to make lasagna and try and find the rest of gossip girl online. then i'm going to site back and damn the man and save the empire as my dvd finally came today. you know that means an empire records post is forthcoming. all the best.

handle me

for monday night's robyn concert i decided to go all out and get dressed to party it up, after all robyn is known for her new dance vibe. i wore my superfines again but this time i showed off those zippers by pairing them with my beloved high heeled oxfords, one of my best winners finds. some pink sparkle sheer socks made the look cool weather appropriate and stamped it with the teen vogue seal of approval. i also got to wear the new philip lim tee i got at holts last call. this is one of those pieces that you see and instantly have to have but is way more money then you'd could afford to pay for it. it's just luck that you end up finding it for less at a discount store and even though it's not this season it's still damn cool. as you can tell, i tried to get creative with the photos yesterday and kevin's drying laundry actually ended up being a cool prop.

who's that girl

i had a rare sunday off this weekend so kev and i decieded to head to the baseball game and check out our jays. they hit a rough patch at the end of april but they won on sunday and are currently on a 5 game win streak, yeah. speaking of baseball the barracudas, the beer league team i play on with my friends, have out first game tomorrow. hopefully, we defend our championship title from last year and come out on top. back to the clothes, i decided to channel kate on sunday so i wore my skinniest skinny jeans, my superfines, to the game. i love how skinny they are and the zippers at the ankle. plus, they are the skinny jean that kate moss made famous and arguably launched the skinny movement. the one problem with them is i had to get them a size bigger so they'd fit the the leg so they're always falling down my waist. i need to tailor them. they're also the kind of pants that you have to peel off so once they get put on they stay on until bed, no trying stuff on.

be mine

i know i've been slacking with the posts but i have been taking lots of pictures so expect many upcoming updates. i'm going to start with my outfit from friday. i cannot get enough of the high waisted mini and this dress belted is a complete take on that look. i layered the dress with a plaid flannel because it's a tank and i was working, it was a little chilly and well because i love plaid flannels. i finished off the look with my cute brown booties from beacons closet that my sister refers to as hobo boots. i don't think she'd be caught dead in them, we have very different styles. also, after what might have turned out to be some improper home bang cutting i decided to forgo the usual side sweep for curled blunter bangs. i think next hair cut i might go for shorter bangs. finally, here's the answer to the "did i didn't i" question. this is my new swallow tattoo and i'm calling him charles, charley or chuck for short. mom, i hope you like it because i love it.

*side note* the next few posts will all be named after robyn songs because i saw her live last night and she was awesome, so so good. definitley check out her album but especially try and see her live because i think her live performance was even better then the record and that is not usually the case.

kristy swanson

it's gotten really cold here again and all i've been wanting to wear the last few days are sweatshirts and cozy stuff, so today's outfit is a simple one. i've pulled my shelltoes out of the back of my closet and decided to base today's look around them and do a graphic outfit. i borrowed this tee from my fellow, in fact i actually got it for him and he hasn't worn it yet so i have a feeling it might become mine. i love the girl in the headdress on it, it's very lord of the flies. i also paid homage to kristy swanson and her originating role as buffy the vampire slayer by wearing a knotted bandana as a necklace. if you watch the film, which is one of my favourites, you'll see she wears them a lot. i received my gladiators today that i won off ebay. they are a tad big but i knew that would probably be the case. still, i like them a lot and i think one pair of brown or tan strappy flats will round out my gladiator needs for this summer.
